OPERA SAN MIGUEL, A.C. is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to identifying and supporting, through scholarships, professional grants, and performing opportunities, the most talented and promising young ópera singers in Mexico, and in the process enriching and perpetuating the musical and artistic life of San Miguel de Allende. The program includes:

  • Scholarship stipends, professional grants, public performances
  • A lengthy selection process of applications and national auditions results in 10 to 12 finalists selected to compete in the national contest, Concurso San Miguel, at which grants and performance engagements are awarded
  • Finalists receive master classes and musical, dramatic, and language coachings, and career counseling, all conducted by an eminent panel of internationally recognized opera experts
  • Auditions and performances are arranged and produced for the winners in San Miguel de Allende and elsewhere in Mexico, the U.S. and Canada, Europe and Asia.
  • Scholarship winners of Concurso San Miguel are currently or recently enrolled in Academy of Vocal Arts (AVA-Philadelphia, PA), Centre de Perfeccionament Plácido Domingo (Valencia, Spain), Manhattan School of Music (New York), Mannes School of Music (New York), Opera Studio of Bellas Artes (Mexico City), Opera Studio of Los Angeles Opera
  • Scholarship winners of Concurso San Miguel have made, or are engaged for, principal role debuts at the Opera de Bellas Artes (Mexico City), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Netherlands Touring Opera, Teatro Liceu (Barcelona, Spain), Salzburg Festival (Salzburg, Austria), Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia (Valencia, Spain), Helikon Opera (Moscow, Russia), Los Angeles Opera (California) and the Metropolitan Opera (New York).

One of Amistad Canada’s Corporate Purposes is "to advance education by providing publicly available scholarships, bursaries and other forms of financial assistance to students in Mexico". Through Opera San Miguel, Amistad Canada is carrying out an arts education project that will provide scholarship, bursary and career grant support to Mexican opera students. The students and Mexican audiences will benefit from this exciting artistic development project.

  • OSM has successfully conducted 8 annual contests to identify top student opera talent
  • OSM is a professionally-run Mexican asociación civil with an Artistic Director assisted by a Company Manager, Public Relations Manager and a full slate of Board of Directors.
  • Each year OSM invites a distinguished panel of teachers and judges to work with student finalists in the annual competition (Concurso)
  • Winners of Concurso must present a proposal for how their scholarship, bursary or grant will be used to advance their opera studies
  • OSM has developed a close relationship with the Canadian program, Les Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques in Montreal
