The Biblioteca Canadian Education Project

AMISTAD CANADA is working with LA BIBLIOTECA DE SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE to enhance the educational and employment opportunities of Mexican children and adolescents who live in San Miguel and the surrounding area.

A creative and very important part of the Biblioteca’s service to the San Miguel community has been its pro-active education programs for Mexican youth. Funds raised by Amistad Canada for its Canadian Education Project will be used to finance free classes, buy books and provide scholarships that would not otherwise be provided.

Free Classes

La Biblioteca provides a wide range of free classes on a variety of subjects not adequately covered in Mexican schools. These classes broaden educational choices in ways that draw children in and substantially enrich their lives.

The costs of fees, books and uniforms that must be covered if a Mexican student is to complete his or her middle and high school education are often too expensive for the average Mexican family, especially those living in rural areas. Fifty percent of Mexican children do not finish high school. Costs associated with university programs are of course much higher, even when students are able to live at home. For more than 35 years, La Biblioteca’s scholarship program has assisted thousands of bright and deserving students to receive more than a primary education.

It has already been demonstrated that Canadian donors can have a sizeable impact. Our goal for the first year of the project was to raise $5000. The Project started on March 1st 2011 and by the end of June this goal was already surpassed. Additional donations will allow us to further augment the Project’s educational activities.

To make a donation in support of this project, go to our Donations page. Whether you donate via the internet or by sending us a cheque, be sure to designate the ‘Biblioteca Project’ as the beneficiary of your gift.
