Mexican Independence Day with Amistad Canada

On September 15 over 50 people gathered in Toronto to celebrate Mexican Independence Day with Amistad Canada.  The event was a Meet and Greet designed to introduce Mexican- Canadians living near Toronto to the work of Amistad Canada.  8 of the 14 Amistad Canada projects were represented and 30 Mexican-Canadians learned not only about our individual projects but also about the history of Amistad Canada.

From a small organization which raised $17,000 for 2 projects in 2010, Amistad Canada has grown to now have 14 projects in 5 parts of Mexico and has raised $500,000 per year in each of our last 3 years!

Of course, all Mexican fiestas have wonderful food which was donated by Chef Elia Herrera of Colibris.  Long time Amistad Canada member, “cantante” Bram Morrison serenaded the group with a couple of Mexican songs. Both children as young as a year and seniors loved singing “Pio Pio Pio” and one attendee was surprised as participants sang Mananitas for his birthday.

All members of the gathering new to Amistad were assigned a “buddy”, one individual who was a long time member of Amistad Canada who could share her/his personal story of the importance of Amistad in his or her life.  Some buddies have arranged to Zoom or meet for lunch to continue the relationship. The bilingual event was both joyous and serious. Older Amistad Canada volunteers were finally able to see each other at a time when COVID appears to be diminishing.  We also extended a hearty welcome to 30 new people who we hope will find their place in a dynamic Amistad Canada of the future.
