Mujeres en Cambio

I find writing about Mujeres en Cambio extraordinarily meaningful because it brings to mind the central issue on which this organization is based: What is the value of a young life?

As you well know, too many young women in rural San Miguel face insurmountable odds – poverty, discrimination, and severely limited educational opportunities. What is the value of a young woman who can overcome those odds to create a life path of her own? And what is her value as a role model for countless other talented girls who harbor feelings of hopelessness about their own futures?

When we meet with the girls in our program, we can see the excitement of new opportunities in their eyes, new worlds unfolding, the smiles on their faces, and the pride their parents take in them. People shed tears of joy. All this makes us feel privileged to be involved in such important work.

And it is not just the students that we hear from. Our Scholarship Chair and Vice President recently visited the 8 community schools where we select our girls. On their fourth stop, they were greeted with the delightful fragrances of a hot Mexican buffet lunch being prepared for the students in the schoolyard. The ladies of course encouraged our volunteers to help themselves at their buffet. They wanted to chat.

It turned out that the ladies preparing lunch were from one of the nearby villages. One said to our Scholarship Chair how very grateful she was to Mujeres en Cambio, “My daughter wasn’t doing very well at school”, she said. “She was facing lots of problems until she got the scholarship of Mujeres en Cambio. Once she had your support, she felt empowered, and her grades started to go up. Right now, she is almost finishing her degree in college, and we are all very happy for her.” Suddenly another lady, and then another wanted to tell our volunteers their story. All of them said how important Mujeres en Cambio support had been for their families and of course their daughters over the years.

Because of your generosity, Mujeres en Cambio will be extending scholarship assistance to 16 additional girls at the Grade 8 equivalent this year. We will continue their financial support all the way through university provided they keep their grades up. It costs so little – less than $300 a year for junior and high school girls a year and $1325 for university. You can also sponsor one or more girls throughout their educational journey.

As always, we express our appreciation for your financial support. You literally create meaningful lives for Mexican girls who didn’t have much of a chance on their own.

We look forward to your being part of the Mujeres en Cambio family for many years to come.

Best wishes,

Donald Caldwell President
