Tepoz Rosa

Tepoz Rosa is an organization that provides women in the Tepoztlán community with information, guidance, and support for the early detection of breast and cervical cancer.

Mission

Tepoz Rosa A.C. is a non-profit association whose mission is to reduce in women the mortality rate from breast and gynecological cancers in the municipality of Tepoztlán, Morelos.

Vision

To consolidate our efforts in the municipality of Tepoztlán as well as to become a model for our social and humanitarian work in the state of Morelos.

History

In 2013, two residents of Tepoztlán, Morelos—Úrsula Hahn and Bridget Galsworthy Estavillo—both breast cancer survivors, recognized the urgent need to educate women about the importance of early detection. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among Mexican women, yet it is up to 95% curable when diagnosed early.

Motivated by this reality, they founded Tepoz Rosa A.C., a non-profit organization committed to promoting breast cancer awareness and organizing annual early detection campaigns.

In 2019, the organization expanded its efforts to include cervical cancer screening campaigns, addressing the second leading cancer-related cause of death among Mexican women.

The founders also recognized that Tepoztlán, as a rural community, had limited access to healthcare services. As a result, many patients were required to travel nearly 100 kilometers to Mexico City for diagnosis and treatment.

During its first year, Tepoz Rosa organized a breast cancer screening campaign that provided 280 free mammograms in just three days. Since then, the program has continued to grow, reaching as many as 1,000 screenings in a single year.

As the organization evolved, it became clear that women diagnosed with cancer needed more than medical screenings. They also required financial, emotional, and logistical support. In response, Tepoz Rosa began assisting patients by providing access to therapists, nutritionists, help with medical appointments, medications not covered by public health services, and other essential resources.

In 2023, Casa Tepoz Rosa, the organization’s permanent headquarters, opened its doors thanks to the generous support of numerous donors, particularly GNP Seguros. Conveniently located for local women and equipped to accommodate the mobile screening units, Casa Tepoz Rosa has become a vital health and information center for the women of Tepoztlán.
