EEESMA- Summer Update and News!
Hello,

You’ve likely heard us say it before, EEESMA School for the Deaf is one of the most forward-thinking, child-centered schools for Deaf children in all of Mexico. We don’t take that claim lightly and now it’s been publically and internationally recognized. We are incredibly proud to share that EEESMA School for the Deaf has been named:

“Best Hearing-Impaired Education Provider 2025 – Central Mexico”

by the Non-Profit Organization Awards hosted by Acquisition International Global Media Ltd. This meaningful award is a direct reflection of the success of the school and your continued belief in our mission. We couldn’t have achieved this recognition without you, thank you.

As we celebrate this accomplishment, we also look ahead. On July 16th, GlobalGiving Bonus Day, there is an opportunity for your donation to grow its impact. You can learn more below.

From all of us at EEESMA School for the Deaf, and especially on behalf of the children whose lives you help change every day, thank you.
With sincere appreciation,On behalf of the Board of Directors,John Doherty

PS Many new friends are receiving this newsletter for the first time. You may have been a participant in the Spring Raffle held last March or attended a fundraising event to benefit the school’s programs.

The raffle and fundraising events were big successes because of your support, thank you.

We encourage you to read more about the programs that the school offers and we wholeheartedly welcome you into the EEESMA family!
July 16th is Bonus Day
We’re reaching out to let you in on a special opportunity from our partner, GlobalGiving, to receive up to $2,000 in proportional matching funds.
Donations of $100 or more will be matched starting at 10am EDT/8am CST on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, during the 24-hour campaign.
Matching funds will amplify your donation of US$100 or more, helping us to continue delivering transformative education and opportunity to our incredible students.
A gift of any size is always needed and extremely appreciated. A recurring monthly donation of as little as $10 (less than the price of a weekly cup of coffee) would make a world of difference. $10 each month translates to $120 a year; a meaningful gift to help enable the school to continue to develop its programs in a sustainable way.
Your support can help EEESMA School for the Deaf continue its important and worthwhile programs. Click on this link to our Global Giving project page on July 16th to make your gift and to ensure it is eligible for incentive funds.

Thank you.

**A note to our Canadian friends, we are planning a matching funds campaign through our partner Amistad Canada in December. More details will follow.

Dia de Familia

Families are the fundamental core of our community; they represent a space of love, growth, and emotional security for each of our students. When invited to share how they wished to celebrate, the devoted mothers and fathers of our students at EEESMA School for the Deaf chose something beautiful: to unite as one and celebrate both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day together on June 6.
With great enthusiasm and love, the families took the lead in organizing a joyful day on the school grounds, filled with laughter, games, crafts, theatre, and a delicious homemade lunch prepared and brought from their own kitchens. It was a heartfelt gathering that reflected the warmth and unity of the EEESMA community.
As the photos show, the day was filled with connection and celebration. Over the past months, these families have grown closer, not only to one another, but to their children, through the shared journey of learning Mexican Sign Language in biweekly classes held at the school. Their newfound ability to communicate more fully with their Deaf children is a profound and moving achievement, and one they are proud to share with each other.
Looking ahead, the parents are already preparing for another milestone: July’s graduation ceremonies. In what promises to be a deeply emotional moment, each parent will express their pride and love for their child in Mexican Sign Language; doing so publicly for the very first time.
We can’t wait to share those powerful moments with you.

Deaf Culture Centre

At EEESMA, we believe that understanding Deaf culture is essential to building a more inclusive and compassionate community. That’s why we are proud to announce plans for the San Miguel Deaf Culture Centre, a space dedicated to sharing the richness of Deaf identity, language, and creativity with the wider public.Beginning later this year, the Centre will welcome visitors weekly to experience the world of our students firsthand. You’ll have the chance to view original artwork created by the students, engage in conversations about what it truly means to be Deaf, and even learn some basic Mexican Sign Language—all guided by the students themselves.
This is more than a visit; it’s an invitation to step into a vibrant world of expression, resilience, and pride. You’ll witness the extraordinary achievements happening every day at EEESMA, meet the students and teachers, and gain a deeper appreciation for their hopes, talents, and dreams for the future.
If you’ll be in San Miguel de Allende later in the year, or the months following, we warmly encourage you to reach out for details and make plans to join us at the school. We can’t wait to welcome you into our community, to share stories, smiles, and a deeper understanding of Deaf culture.
Together let’s celebrate the voices that speak with their hands and the hearts that inspire us all.
Karate

Nurturing the whole student, mind, body, and spirit is basic to our philosphy. One of the many ways our students grow in confidence and character is through their dedicated participation in Karate. This discipline continues to be a source of pride and achievement for many of our young learners.
Currently, fourteen students are enrolled in Karate classes, and the program continues to grow. Several newcomers have recently joined, beginning their journey at the white belt level, while others are making exciting progress through yellow and orange belts. Notably, Abril, aged 14, has reached the blue belt level, an impressive achievement, and is now preparing to test for the next stage. Way to go, Abril!
In June, students Saul, Angel, and Montserrat successfully passed their belt exams, earning their yellow and orange Kyu belts. These milestones are a testament to their focus, determination, and the guidance of their dedicated instructor, Maestro Enrique, whose passion and encouragement inspire the students to strive for excellence.
Karate teaches valuable life skills that extend beyond the mat. For young people, especially those who are Deaf, karate provides:

·       Improved Focus & Discipline
·       Confidence & Self-Esteem
·       Physical Health
·       Social Connection & Inclusion
·       Self-Advocacy & Empowerment

Congratulations to all our Karate students, and to Maestro Enrique, for your remarkable accomplishments and continued growth!
